The wonderful thing about this tv show is how unpolished and real the characters are. Lena along with her friends are flawed individuals who move through life as awkwardly as we do. They make mistakes and often exercise bad judgment but they redeem themselves with their charming, quirky, creative, intelligent and funny personalities.

 

 

Here’s a piece Lena Dunham wrote for Rookie where she describes her experience losing her virginity: Absolute Begginers

 

 

Along with Tavi of RookieMag, Lena is a hero of mine. My inner teenager/underdog/ugly duckling is reassured when watching a less than perfect woman struggling through a stunted love life and complex friendships.

Lena’s character Hannah is a self deprecating 20-something woman trying to figure out how to live her life as best she knows how. She struggles with money and paying rent and never tires of trying to manipulate her parents into supporting her, she has a non-committal sexual relationship with eternally-shirtless Adam all the while maintaining beautiful yet imperfect friendships with her three best friends who are equally flawed yet are conventionally more attractive than her.

 

 

The reason so many girls from my generation relate to this show is because it portrays all the messiness that comes along with growing up. I admire Lena Dunham’s balls. She keeps it real.

 

 

Season 2 premiered last Sunday but I’ve yet to see the first episode. I’ll try my hardest to be patient and wait until at least 4 or 5 episodes have aired so that I can have a proper Girls marathon.
